Alli: Your On-the-Road Ally
Brand & Background: Alli, pronounced “al-lee,” is a play on the word ally “al-lie.” Alli is women-owned and designed by a creator who was inspired by her own personal experience in situations that Alli aims to help mitigate and make safer for drivers.
Description: Alli is the latest digital interface program for cars that prioritizes safety and support while on the road. Alli is designed with minorities in mind, specifically women and POC to provide them extra guidance and support when they feel they are in unsafe situations while driving or in emergencies such as their car having problems on the side of the road.
Goals & Objectives:
- To provide real, in-time alerts and tips on how to handle potential issues that will enable everyday drivers to identify problems within their vehicles quickly and safely
- Detection technology that makes advanced alerts on when driving abilities are compromised, such as brake issues, leaks, flat tires, overheating, etc. and the potential causes of those issues
- Direct access to emergency resources such as fire, EMT, and police, as well as ally resources so that drivers who are alone but uncomfortable with being so when services show up can request support
- Direct information on nearby repair shops, complete with reviews, contact info, specialties of each shop, price ranges, etc.
- Quick tips and features that enable Alli to breakdown car lingo for the everyday driver so that vehicle owners can shop up to repair shops informed on exactly what they need done, what they can afford & what they know is reasonable, and can feel confident in asserting themselves in scenarios where they may feel talked down to or out of their comfort zones
Target Audience: inexperienced or new drivers, such as high schoolers and college kids, as well as a focus on women, POC, LGBTQ+, and any other minorities who are more often targeted by police for unnecessary reasons when getting pulled over or when dealing with strangers
Messaging & Tone: “We want to empower our audience to feel safe, informed, and educated, not only about their vehicles and what steps are the best course of action to keep them safe and save them money, but also to feel confident that the resources Alli provides them are reliable, safe, and equitable for all.”
Assets & Deliverables: The final product is a digital interface for standard consumer vehicles of all modern models that meets the objectives and goals of the project and also implements and improves upon prior program features, such as the availability to control and utilize navigation, bluetooth, music, and phone calls on the interface.
Images, videos, and icons, will be found on free imaging websites, YouTube, Google Fonts, and any others could potentially be created in Adobe Illustrator if necessary.
Challenges:
- The largest challenge will be making sure that the features are not redundant. Many car models already have safety features in place for when car parts are having issues or have buttons that enable people to call for help. Ensuring that I have done enough research to make improvements on those features, at the very least, is a step I will have to focus on. But truthfully, other than that, the assignment feels very straightforward and I think it will be fun and engaging to make something that is helpful. The design process always comes with learning, so I may discover things that don’t work or that take a different direction than I originally envisioned, but that’s part of the fun.
Objectives:
- To make a design that serves all customers but enhances the experience for users that may not get prioritized in design features – essentially ensuring that my design makes equity a priority for minorities, like women and POC, who don’t always feel safe using the help resources “available”
- Making sure that the program works and places functionality above aesthetic
- Program specifics as the idea stands:
